Pollinators and Kids

Fun Family Activities to Help the Bees This June

June is buzzing with opportunity—and at Donaldson’s Greenhouse & Nursery, we love helping families connect with nature while giving pollinators a helping hand. National Pollinator Week (June 16–22) is the perfect time to explore how important bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds are—and how fun it can be to help them thrive.

🌸 Plant a Pollinator Patch (or Pot!)

Planting flowers for pollinators is easy and fun for kids. Here are a few favorites:

  • Zinnias – Bright and irresistible to bees

  • Coneflowers – Great for butterflies and long bloomers

  • Milkweed – Monarch magnet!

  • Lavender – Attracts bees and calms the senses

  • Sunflowers – Big impact, easy grower

Try this: Let each child decorate and plant their own pot. Add their name with a painted rock or plant marker!

🐝 Build a Bee Hotel

Many native bees nest in small holes—not hives. A DIY bee hotel makes a great craft project:

You’ll need:

  • An empty soup can

  • Bamboo straws or hollow twigs

  • Twine to hang

  • Paint or markers (optional)

How-to: Cut twigs to fit, pack the can tightly, decorate, and hang it in a sunny, dry spot.

🕵️‍♀️ Go on a Pollinator Scavenger Hunt

Explore your backyard or local garden center! Create a list like:

  • A bee on a bloom 🐝

  • A butterfly with spots 🦋

  • A buzzing sound 🎧

  • A yellow flower 🌼

  • A hummingbird sighting 🐦‍⬛

Pro tip: Offer a fun reward for completing the hunt—like a seed packet or popsicle!

💡 Why It Matters

Pollinators are vital to our ecosystems—and teaching kids to care about bees and butterflies builds lifelong appreciation for the planet.

At Donaldson’s Greenhouse, we’ve got pollinator-friendly plants, seeds, and all the supplies you need to create your own backyard habitat. Stop in for advice or pick up a Pollinator Project Kit to get started.
