Garden-to-Table: Harvest Tips & Easy Recipes from the Backyard

Celebrate Summer’s Bounty with Donaldson’s Greenhouse

There’s nothing quite like the joy of stepping into your own backyard and gathering fresh herbs, veggies, or berries for dinner. At Donaldson’s Greenhouse & Nursery, we love seeing our customers reap the rewards of their hard work in the garden — and July is prime time for harvest!

Whether you’re growing tomatoes in containers, peppers in raised beds, or basil in a sunny windowsill, here are a few tips to help you make the most of your garden-to-table experience — plus some simple, delicious ways to enjoy it all.

🌿 Harvest Tips for Peak Flavor

  • Tomatoes: Pick when fully colored and slightly soft to the touch. Leave them on the vine for maximum flavor, but don’t wait too long or they may split.

  • Peppers: Harvest bell and hot peppers when they’re glossy and firm. Green peppers can be picked early, or left to ripen into red, yellow, or orange.

  • Zucchini & Squash: Pick when about 6–8 inches long — younger squash are more tender and flavorful.

  • Cucumbers: Check daily! Harvest when firm and evenly green to avoid bitterness.

  • Basil: Pinch back often and before it flowers to encourage new growth and fuller plants.

  • Herbs (like parsley, mint, and dill): Harvest in the morning when oils are strongest, and snip no more than a third of the plant at a time.

🍴 Easy Garden-Fresh Recipes to Try Tonight

Fresh tomatoes + basil + mozzarella = pure summer joy. Drizzle with olive oil, balsamic glaze, and a pinch of sea salt.

2. Zucchini Ribbon Stir-Fry
Sauté thin ribbons of zucchini with garlic, a splash of soy sauce, and a sprinkle of sesame seeds. Add in peppers or onions from the garden for extra flavor.

3. Cucumber Mint Water

🧺 Make the Most of It

  • Harvest often to keep plants producing.

  • Store smart: Use breathable baskets or bowls to keep produce fresh. Avoid sealing wet herbs in plastic bags.

  • Get the kids involved: Harvesting is a great way to teach kids where food comes from — and they might even be more willing to try it!
