5 Great Hydrangeas Every Garden Should Have
At Donaldson’s Greenhouse we try to bring you the best new plant material that is introduced each year to the home and landscape industry. The variety of flower shapes, flower colors and blooming seasons has expanded with each year. Here are five of our favorite varieties:
Hydrangea Endless Summer
The Endless Summer® Collection consists of four beautiful re-blooming hydrangeas. The Original, the first of the hydrangea varieties in the collection, revolutionized the way gardeners were able to incorporate hydrangeas in their landscapes. It is still the hallmark of the shrub collection and with good reason. It was the first hydrangea discovered that blooms on the previous year’s woody stems and the new season’s growth. With The Original, you get an endless summer of possibilities and incredible color from spring through fall.
Whether you are looking for full foundation plantings, striking container gardens or beautiful cut flower hydrangea arrangements, The Original Endless Summer hydrangea is a hardy, disease-resistant and time-tested sensation.
This unique panicle hydrangea revolutionized landscaping across North America. Huge, football-shaped flowers open in an elegant celadon green that looks fresh and clean in summer’s heat. The blooms age to an array of pink, red, and burgundy which persists through frost for months of irresistible flowers. You can use ‘Limelight’ hydrangea just about any way you can imagine: as a showy flowering hedge, to screen off air conditioners, as an attention-getting specimen, in containers, flower gardens, or anywhere around your home. A long-time favorite of professional florists, it also makes an excellent cut flower, fresh or dried.
Hydrangea Pinky Winky
Huge two-toned blooms! Pinky Winky has an unusual name, and an even more unusual flower. The large white panicles open in mid to late summer, and as summer turns to fall the florets at the base of the panicles turn pink. The flower panicles continue to grow, producing new white florets at the tip. The result is spectacular two-toned flower panicles that can reach up to 16 inches in length! This is a real show-stopper that’s also very easy to grow. Adaptable to most soils and both sun and shade, Pinky Winky will thrive in most gardens.
Hydrangea Rhythmic Blue ‘Let’s Dance’
The flowers of this latest Let’s Dance reblooming hydrangea are truly amazing. The florets have a distinctive geometric shape, and are closely packed into full, richly colored mophead flowers. A real workhorse, it flowers in early summer, then reblooms in later summer. The reliable blooms are held up on sturdy stems; a tidy habit and good wilt-resistance add to its appeal. The real show, however, is its easy shift from pink to rich amethyst-blue flowers by adjusting the soil pH. It has the richest, most vibrant blue seen on a hydrangea!
Hydrangea Quick Fire
This is a wonderful dwarf form of the popular Quick Fire™ hydrangea. Like the original, it is early blooming, flowering about a month before other hydrangeas. White flowers transform to pink-red as summer progresses. Compact size fits easily into any landscape. Use it in a mixed border, or as a showy specimen or foundation plant. Its early bloom time will extend your garden’s hydrangea season.
